Unable to resist a bargain (and a relaxing one, to boot) I headed to yoga this week. Laura Carroll, who also runs the Rooftop Yoga at the Rooftop Movies site, talked us through a challenging, yet very soothing, vinyasa practice, that left me feeling strong, calm and centred.
Though I’ve practiced yoga before I’ve never done it outdoors. The evening air was refreshing and relaxing, and being outside in the Piazza gave the class a really fresh energy – no sweat-stained gym carpet here.
A full Piazza. The free yoga mats on offer were quickly filled, with back-row patrons spreading out towels, sarongs, or just stretching out on the grass. It’s fantastic to see so many people embracing the City’s initiative, and even better when kids picnicking with their families join in with the practice as well.
What’s not so great:
Though I do love a bargain, I’d pay top dollar to do this class again if my fee funded a microphone for Laura. Being unable to hear her direction disrupted my practice – that much neck craning is not conducive to relaxation – but I did appreciate her clear physical demonstrations, which accompanied her instructions.
The City Life season runs weekly until April, with yoga occupying the Piazza each Wednesday between 6pm and 7pm. I’ll be back next week for sure – just a little earlier, to secure a position within earshot.
