We love breakfast. It’s the only meal when you can eat dessert without hearing your mum’s reprimanding voice in your head reminding you about vitamins and vegetables. When else can you drench your carbs with syrup, chocolate and even ice cream without feeling a twinge of guilt?
We reckon we’ve found the home of Perth’s best dessert-as-breakfast: South Perth’s new Gusto Food Café. Gusto isn’t just another café on Angelo Street (although… geesh, how many cafés down one neighbourhood need?!). Yes, they serve a great cup of Saccaria coffee and have a pretty impressive selection of savoury breakfast and lunch options. But it’s Gusto’s sweets that are responsible for it being the street’s hands-down favourite.
Our dish of choice is the Crumpets, which are made in-house and served with berry compote, peanut gravel and double cream for good measure. But coming a close second is the Cinnamon Toast – a stack of thickly sliced French toast layered with berries, honeycomb, banana and bacon drizzled with maple syrup. Oh, and it comes with ice cream on the side, naturally.
For those who like to see/drool over their breakfast before ordering it, the glass case below the register has a gorgeous collection of homemade brownies, biscuits, slices, muffins, donuts, pies, cakes and churros.
Even the nutritionists say to eat like a king at breakfast. Though this might not have been exactly what they had in mind…
